Nigeria is 50 this year!!

Happy New Year! Nigeria will be 50 this year! :o)

Nigerians are fortunate to live in a nation which is fast growing, having intelligent and resourceful people with strong cultural backgrounds, and having a vast amount of resources and raw materials. In the same vein, there is a huge potential for change and economic development as well as social, infrastructural and political improvement. Nonetheless, we are proudly Nigerian and NO we are not terrorists :)

Reality TV Shows

Mona is here oh! For a minute, I thought this blog was done for. My External Hard Drive (with all my info) packed up! I thought I had lost everything - my HDD actually said 0.00GB when I had 14.09GB worth of data. So, I had to pay a fee but thanks to God and to Stellar Phoenix, I recovered ALL my files. So incase you've had that problem recently, the site is worth checking out. The software is available for $99 or Euro78. Anyway, phew - the keyword here being backup (I'm usually quite good with backing up but........ don't ask).

This post is based on a few U.S. reality TV shows - not exactly Naija to the Core so thought I'd start off with giving you some Naija info and a freebie before moving on to the Real Deal!

i)
Outta Town Entertainment (Naija group) want me to give you guys their debut album/mix tape to listen to as part of a promotional offer. Download it here.

Visit their myspace(s) and support them:

ii) Watch out for more info from me on the 2007 Nigerian Breweries Star MEGA Jam featuring T-Pain and Kanye West in Abuja and Lagos (14th and 15th December respectively) - watch this space.

iii) Finally, I don't know if any of you read the news about two weeks ago where the new speaker, Dimeji Bankole was accused of dodging NYSC. Well, he has now presented his NYSC certificate to the public. Click on the image below to view and read story here.

REALITY TV SHOWS

i) The Salt-N-Pepa Reality TV Show / VH1

I just had to start off with this. Did you guys know these two ladies didn't get on? Since they split up it'd been more like hatred. I'm not a fan of reality TV shows at all (as per easiest way to make money) but this one is worth watching - most of it seems real oh. 5 out of 5 from me - okay I'm partial. I love S N' P - WHO DOESN'T?!

You can watch the show online at the official site here and below is a video of them in action LOL!

P.S. if it doesn't play, watch it here - QUITE INTERESTING.

ii) Run's House / MTV / MTV BASE

"Rev. Run, (Joseph Simmons of Run-DMC and brother of Russell Simmons), and his wife Justine continue to manage a very bustling household and keep the lives of their 5 children as normal as possible amid the extravagance of their surroundings." The show is back for the 4th season and is quite amusing to watch these rich black kids on TV. Other than that, their lifestyle doesn't seem phony and is a 4 out of 5 from me.

Here is a link to the Run's House TV show site for episode guides, cast info and trailers.

Even the Simmons daughters are doing big things with their shoe line - PASTRY footwear. More info on pastry kicks here.

iii) Man and Wife / MTV

Last and probably the LEAST as I'm not sure I'm feeling this yet. A show about and featuring Fatman Scoop and his wife, Shanda. An article says:

"Funny, colorful and raw, Man And Wife, was born completely out of Fatman Scoop (Grammy Winner/Legend) and his wife Shanda’s marriage. The show gives viewers an interactive and voyeuristic role in the steamy, wild, naughty banter between a sexy couple in love, keeping it real, and keeping it hot!"

Right now I'll give it a 2.5 out of 5 - not really my thing, but come back later. Check out their website - http://www.manandwife.tv/

That's all folks! Come back tomorrow for a lot of Naija (and International) news and later on this week for a Proudly Nigerian collabo.

Just released yesterday - the new Common video featuring beautiful people - Kerry Washington, Alicia Keys, Kanye West and Serena Williams. The video for the song titled 'I Want You' was directed by Kerry Washington (who is rumoured to be Common's new chic). Check it out:

Here are some pictures from the video shoot:

I have the song here for you to grab!

Not sure if everyone has heard about Emirates' new First Class Suites on their Boeing 777-300ER's and 777-200LR's? It was highlighted as blogworthy by Naijanaz.

  • 23 inch widescreen with the ice system
  • 1000+ channels of on-demand entertainment
  • In-seat laptop with email

Nigeria: Happy Independence and VideoBytes

Hip Hip Hip, Hooray! - should have been the title of this post lol. So how are you all feeling? Was anyone keen enough to wear green and white to work? And what did those of you do in Nig for the public holiday? (Grrrr)

Let me know, this will be brief but will be back tomorrow with more independence day events you missed (across the globe).

I have a few pics to include in this post, seeing as it's our independence:

Proudly Nigerian

Most of us are proudly Nigerian (thank God) so no need to discuss this but hey it's independence so why not re-post? Check out my 4 Proudly Nigerian posts though. :o)

419: Not Our Label

Hmmmm like Tuface would say - No be small thing oh! Well, let us start rejecting it sha. You can be sure I have been planning for an Advanced Fee Fraud post for a couple of months now. It will be mad. But you can check out this video, this person meant business oh - a whole gallery exhibition regarding 419. It is titled - 419 or the spanish prisoner, exhibit in Girona (click to watch pretty interesting). But why would this person call us out like that now? - And what would make it worse is if people paid to attend this exhibition - wawaweewa. Nigerians Reject it!

Picture - Lagos: Stori Plenti

I don't know why I inserted this but I like the pic, very Lagosy (without the random albums of course) :o)

NYSC

People who have gone through this probably have a copy of this - it's the NYSC certificate. For those who are interested in doing NYSC (serving Nigeria post college prior to working), it is worth checking Ayoola's blog. NYSC also have a website - check it out.

Dimples, although all roads led to NYSC camp in Lagos for her, didn't quite come back doing it just yet. So yes we always have the Nigerian uncertainty. She does have a diary/account of her escapades on her 'NYSC trip'. I'll post that up on Wednesday or Thursday.

Now to some videos

Nigeria is the best place - Gba o (music by JJC & 419 squad, very ironic name with regards to this post i.e. 419 not our label hehe but oh well)

My Love by 2face and VIP (they will be in London this weekend - click here)

Proudly Nigerian: The Funny Post

I am Nigerian and I am proud - mostly because of what a lot of Nigerians have achieved and it's nice to hear that we are sharp people with that Vavavoom! I met a South African guy last weekend and he goes "well most of the Africans people meet at uni are Nigerian" then come the Ghanaians (yea they do try) and then Kenyans...hehe but we are the 'ish'.

I also love Nigeria because we come up with all sorts! As innn! Take for instance this young lad, men he made my whole afternoon, it was filled with shock and laughter! No really WHAT IS THIS?

If you are still totally amused or in shock like me, this is the original (i.e. what he was trying to copy)

LOLLLL, anywhoo! After you've finished laughing, I'd like to introduce a friend into Blogville - her blog is titled A Gold Mine and she is a crazy chic - also Proudly Nigerian. At least I hope! So welcome her to Blogville please.

Now for some real Proudly Nigerian stuff. In line with the Federal Government's renewed drive to encourage exports, a group of experts have come up with suggestions on how to improve the image of our local products by making their names attractive and in line with International Standards on exports. • Boli - Barbecue Plantain
  • Roasted corn - Corn Aflame
  • Eko - Corn Jellos
  • Moin moin - Bean pie
  • Isi ewu - Goat-hed o lickins' (remember ur fingers)
  • Garri - Grain o' fibres
  • Bokoto/ Nkwobi - Hoof salad
  • Ogi/Akamu - Corn Caramel
  • Puff Puff - Energy Buns

  • Kunnu - Grain Alive
  • Burundi - Cocno Jaw-Breakers
  • Bread and Akara - Bean cake Burger
  • Ofada rice - Unpolished Rice for Vegetarians

This is a joke right? P.S. I did not come up with them.

HURRRAHHHHH!!

...........Naija to the Core is 1 today!!

CONGRATULATIONS ORE M'OWO RE WA!! Hehehehe - rah (as in razz). Ooooh I'm so excited I can't even blog (hehehe looking for a good excuse to run away and not blog today but too many eyes watching lol).

My Blog is a year old today, literally it isn't as I actually started my first blog-post in May so we have another birthday to celebrate hehehe - any excuse to drink up! So free Mojitos for all readers, just put it on my tab.

I am actually quite impressed - I stuck with it for a whole year. Some of you may know I am one of those multi-multi-taskers, wanting to do too many things and then hardly get any of the tasks complete but blogging seems to be a keen hobby or call it a habit of mine.

I have had my highs:

And my Lows:

I have had some funny things too cos I like to see myself as a lively happy comical person:

Things for the chicks and the lads:

A lot of times I also found myself running away and coming back hehehe (my favourite past-time):

Honestly, I am quite proud of myself, quite chuffed. Some may say my style of writing has changed a bit, I believe I put passion into some of the articles depending on what I am writing about and that is not to say I only did that in the past. I love blogging so hopefully I will be celebrating my BlogDay this time next year. I will give freebies and party-packs tomorrow, to all who came here for awoof stuvvs.

But I strongly advise you guys to read all or some of the links I have put in and colour-coded for you with my time and effort hehe. But yes, go through my selected posts and comment if you like.

Mona's Miscellany of Items!

Proudly Nigerian (A Tribute to Nigerian Literature)

The post in Ore's notes headlined "Who says Nigerians don't dig reading?" really got me pondering about my country and all the Nigerian stars that shine in and outside of Nigeria. Focusing on literature in particular, it is only right for me to start with Prof. Wole Soyinka, the 1986 nobel laureate --"who in a wide cultural perspective and with poetic overtones fashions the drama of existence"--

As well as being an author, he is a dramatist, playwright, poet and humanitarian. He has written several books and journals including - The Lion and the Jewel, The Trials of Brother Jero, The Open Sore of A Continent, Ake and his latest: You must Set Forth At Dawn.

I am very certain he is an inspiration to almost all the Nigerian poets, writers, journalists and playwrights out there.

He has sponsored prizes in literature such as:

  • The Wole Soyinka Award for Investigative Reporting on Human Rights Issues in Nigeria won by Bayo Ewuoso of The Punch. Some pictures of the winners and runners-up below (click to enlarge):

Personally, I am extremely proud of Nigeria in terms of literature as we are by a great feat the best in West Africa and the entire continent.

To name a few achievements:

  • Shola Oshunkeye was awarded the 2006 CNN African Journalist Award for his article, "Niger's Graveyard of the Living."
  • The Late Ezenwa Ohaeto won the NLNG Nigeria Literature Prize for his poetry collection, Chants of a Minstrel a few weeks before he died here in England.
  • Diana Omo Evans won last year's inaugural £10,000 Orange Prize for New Writers with her debut novel about a set of twins, 26a.

  • The book also won a Betty Trask award & Decibel Award and received a nomination for the Guardian First Book Award.
  • Writer of Purple Hibiscus, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie was short-listed for the Caine Prize for African Writing. She won the O. Henry Award for Short Fiction 2003.
  • Her short stories were also selected for the Commonwealth Broadcasting Association and the BBC awards and they also won the PEN USA Center short story competition.
  • 18-year old Onyeka George Nwelue began to write at the age of eleven and won the THOMSON Short Story Prize in 2000 (at the age of twelve) with "Chants of a Poet"
  • He was nominated as the International Library of Poetry Best Poet of 2005, and won the Outstanding Achievement in Poetry Silver Bowl and the 2004 Afro Poet of the Year. He is presently both the founder and editor of Flames magazine and BritNig Poetry Club, based in Lagos, Nigeria and Wales, UK.
  • He also delivered the paper under the title, ‘The Trends of Contemporary Nigerian Literature’ at the Youth Literary Seminar, which recently took place at the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh.

I think I'll stop here today and come back with a part two sometime this week.
