The Nigeria Music Awards will be held on Saturday the 12th, August at the New Connaught Rooms in Covent Garden, London. It'll showcase the best of Nigeria's artistes and those in entertainment. The organisers have publicised this extremely well and in turn, expect a big turn out. So if you are interested and keen on stuff like this, visit the website. Of course, there is all the effizzyvocab with the different levels of tickets, i.e. the platinum ticket gets you champagne, canapes and all that shiznizvocab but if I know better from other Nigerian events I've atteneded, it's not to be too optimistic about first class treatment when you have a gold or platinum ticket.
On this site they actually say you can sit next to your favourite artist if you get the £250 one. Hmmm, do they actually mean beside them or on the row next to theirs? Even that's a bit farfetched.....Platinum ko, mercury ni! Have they forgotten the colour of the tape in bureaucratic Nigeria? Hehehe.... ok well they did say subject to availability.
Anyways, you can also nominate winners here. Group categories include:
• Best male vocalist
• Best female vocalist
• Best group
• Lifetime achievement award
• Posthumous achievement award
• Best promoter award
So get going guys, 12th August 2006 (will be aired on BEN TV)
NOTE: 20% OF THE TICKET SALES WILL BE DONATED TO THE DOWN SYNDROME CHARITY ORGANISATION IN NIGERIA AND YOUTH FOUNDATION MUSIC SCHOOL.

Have you wondered why the NIGERIAN Music Awards will take place in England?
It was a heated debate at a radio station here. More like a tirade really (I was in the studio). Some people think it crazy.
Something is actually wrong!
The motive behind hosting a Nigerian thing in England is very clear; ROI is sure but we should note that this affects the whole cultural image of our dear country.
I am really sad about the venue of this event. It really shows how low the self image of my country is. South Africa is hosting the world in 4 years from now and we can not even host our people for an event that has 80% of its followership in Nigeria.
Why sell our birthright for a stinking pottage?
Sad! really sad! really really sad!
Thank God i'm not the only one who is thinking that. SO PLAIN STUPID! (Not the charity part). Ludicrous.
Despite all the good points made above I really hope it goes well.
Yea it's a bit strange about it being here in the UK...I think they are trying though and probably had their reasons, majority of their sponsors are UK based I dunno..in saying that as well, there are loads of events that take place in Nigeria...
i can focus on the negative...this has been a long time in comming considering Nigerian artists are actually BLOWING UP!!! I dont see everyone hollaing when we play our friendly football games at selhurst park...abeg...its the thought that counts...big up the NMA's
Good one "ai'hammed delot"...peeps all we can do is encourage them.
It's not like they havn't got awards in Nigeria, there's the FAME music awards,AMEN,and the debut Hip Hop awards last year was very nice(watched it on Tv) :)MEN BIG UP JARE!!!!.Naija artist have started arriving in London small small...saw Faze(the last arm of the Plantashun Boiz) this weekend in this rather alarming purple suit...but anyhow i like his music so i ain't even going to hate....Good luck to everyone involved in the NMA's can't wait to watch it on BEN.
I am actually not surprised @ the reactions above.
It surely shows where our patroitism lies.......
I have never heard of the Grammies, American Music Award or BET Awards taking place in UK. What can i say? I believe I have said it all "the low self image of my country people"
I think all the people in support of this move are based in UK..
no wonder
This is called Nigerian Music Award suppose to be organised by Nigerans but hosted in UK where 80% of the supporters are in Nigeria.
I dont think it will be an issue if AMEN Awards was held in UK but Nigerian MA........
Mona you cracked me up - Platinum ko, mercury ni. hahaha. are you going to this event?
@ Onada, I'm not going oh, just promoting....@ Dimples, faze in a purple suit? I have to ring him about that blunder.
@ Dipo....I see what you mean but let us thank our stars we have awards ceremonies now...we will get there AMEN, it's a slow process
How about they have the awards in naij??
and you sit beside your favourite artist?? Like who? tony tetuila...platinum abi?? lolll..jokes mehn..
they should go back to lagos
Sup Mona, just discovered your blog. Very interesting. Hmm... maybe I should start mine too... nah!
i honestly dont think there's anything wrong with hosting the awards in the UK...going on the assumption that is...that the organizers that came up with it reside there...fine...let's rename it...the british nigerian music awards? happy now?
we've come a LONG way...step by step...the award show may bring exposure and more recognition in the UK than was there before...so show your support!!!
but £250 is a bit steep sha. what happens if several ppl want to sit by the same person...do they then get into a biddng war...i guess im just cheap in general...if i want to sit beside anyone i'll invite them for lunch at my house...
@ diamond hawk
i honestly dont think there's anything wrong with hosting the awards in the UK
u dont think?
thats where the issue lie
hmmm...dipo aka anon...nice response from you...real nice!!! i can tell you're one of those professional noise makers...
there is NOTHING wrong with it...go and plan yours in nigeria if you dont like it
@ diamond hawk
...professional noise makers?
It has come to this. I am really sorry if you feel insulted......
i didnt feel insulted...what i did feel was that it was your intent to do so, n'est ce pas? actually ur response brought out spontaneous laughter...not sure why...i read it, all of a sudden i was laughing
anyways, it's all good. But when you get ready to plan the Nigerian version...let me know...will hook you up with the necessary ppl...have a great weekend dipo
:-)
I think its silly odd that the awards are taking place TWICE in one year - one in DC a few months ago and now another in UK. how ODD! or maybe it was a diff. community?! who knows...
Quite strange though that award is being held in London....
